Leadership

Written by Dr Utsav Reddy, Leadership Lead

What inspired you to take the role?

An effective leader can make a dramatic difference to the culture within an organisation and how it performs. In the healthcare setting, this can translate into better outcomes for our patients. Clinical leadership and quality improvement account for a significant part of the GMC Generic Professional Capabilities framework and whilst I was a urology trainee formal training was in its infancy. One of our aims is to develop courses to provide this formal leadership training and a better understanding of complex healthcare systems, such as the NHS.

What new teaching developments /programmes running or intending to?

Dovetailing with undergraduate leadership training, we offer a comprehensive programme throughout the year including modules from the NHS Leadership Academy Edward Jenner course for Foundation doctors, Introduction to Leadership for Emerging and Aspiring Doctors (ILEAD) for ST1/ST2 equivalent doctors and Developing Clinical Leaders for ST3+ equivalent doctors. The content is constantly evolving depending on current and future challenges within healthcare.

Synopsis of the department?

We are a diverse faculty from a wide range of backgrounds and provide a supportive environment to drive professional development and wellbeing. Importantly, we also look forward to learning from the experiences of participants.

What it has to offer?

Opportunities to meet like-minded healthcare professionals and the senior management team, which may include participation in quality improvement projects. These are supported by tutors with clinical and managerial experience. Change management runs through much of our content.

What are the advantages of trainees coming to us?

Participants will begin to understand their own leadership style with a view to becoming more rounded clinicians and senior leaders of the future. They will also have opportunities to use theory in clinical practice. We also have links to the UEA Norwich Business School and are able to draw from their experiences.

What extra can we offer?

A supportive and confidential environment where discussion and reflection are encouraged. We are a forward thinking department and if participants have any areas of interest around leadership, we would be very happy to explore these further.
