Written by Dr David Spokes, Ophthalmology (RCOphth)
What inspired you to take the role?
I was interested in shaping the way training in ophthalmology is delivered at NNUH and contributing to the training in the region. NNUH is one of the larger units on the ophthalmology rotation in the Eastern region and we continue to ensure our trainees enjoy a high standard of clinical and surgical training.
What new teaching developments /programmes running or intending to?
Under TPD leadership and with input from a large number of colleagues we host a number of the regional sub-speciality training days covering core curriculum areas and giving OSCE experience. We link up with some of the simulation training days and also host the regional ST! induction week every August.
Synopsis of the department?
Friendly atmosphere and supportive colleagues delivering high quality clinical services and training in ophthalmology.
What it has to offer?
It’s a busy department so trainees gain lots of clinical experience and gain confidence in managing patients’ conditions to high standards. The department has a strong research pedigree and we are involved in a number of multi-centre clinical trials at any given time. We have strong links with labs at UEA giving opportunity for lab-based research and higher degrees.
What are the advantages of trainees coming to us?
Plenty of clinical experience and variety, opportunities for core and sub-specialty surgical training and chance to get involved in research and publication.
What extra can we offer?
A supportive, informal atmosphere and plenty of opportunities to develop clinical, surgical and research experience.
